"By writing the 26 letters of the alphabet in a certain order one may put down almost any message (this book 'is written with the same letters' as the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Winnie the Pooh, only the order of the letters differs). In the same way Nature is able to convey with her language how a cell and a whole organism is to be constructed and how it is to function. Nature has succeeded better than we humans; for the genetic code there is only one universal language which is the same in a man, a bean plant and a bacterium."

HISTORY OF GOD

Karen Armstrong

The God of the Mystics

Page 250

"(The Book of Creation). There is no attempt to describe the creative process realistically; the account is unashamedly symbolic and shows God creating the world by means of language as though he were writing a book. But language has been entirely transformed and the message of creation is no longer clear. Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet is given a numerical value; by combining the letters with the sacred numbers, rearranging them in endless configurations, the mystic weaned his mind away from the normal connotations of words."

FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS

A QUEST FOR THE BEGINNING AND THE END

Graham Hancock 1995

Chapter 32

Speaking to the Unborn

Page 285

"It is understandable that a huge range of myths from all over the ancient world should describe geological catastrophes in graphic detail. Mankind survived the horror of the last Ice Age, and the most plausible source for our enduring traditions of flooding and freezing, massive volcanism and devastating earthquakes is in the tumultuous upheavals unleashed during the great meltdown of 15,000 to 8000 BC. The final retreat of the ice sheets, and the consequent 300-400 foot rise in global sea levels, took place only a few thousand years before the beginning of the historical period. It is therefore not surprising that all our early civilizations should have retained vivid memories of the vast cataclysms that had terrified their forefathers.
Much harder to explain is the peculiar but distinctive way the myths of cataclysm seem to bear the intelligent imprint of a guiding hand.l Indeed the degree of convergence between such ancient stories is frequently remarkable enough to raise the suspicion that they must all have been 'written' by the same 'author'.
Could that author have had anything to do with the wondrous deity, or superhuman, spoken of in so many of the myths we have reviewed, who appears immediately after the world has been shattered by a horrifying geological catastrophe and brings comfort and the gifts of civilization to the shocked and demoralized survivors?
White and bearded, Osiris is the Egyptian manifestation of this / Page 286 / universal figure, and it may not be an accident that one of the first acts he is remembered for in myth is the abolition of cannibalism among the primitive inhabitants of the Nile Valley.2 Viracocha, in South America, was said to have begun his civilizing mission immediately after a great flood; Quetzalcoatl, the discoverer of maize, brought the benefits of crops, mathematics, astronomy and a refined culture to Mexico after the Fourth Sun had been overwhelmed by a destroying deluge.
Could these strange myths contain a record of encounters between scattered palaeolithic tribes which survived the last Ice Age and an as yet unidentified high civilization which passed through the same epoch?
And could the myths be attempts to communicate?

A message in the bottle of time"

'Of all the other stupendous inventions,' Galileo once remarked,

what sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though very distant either in time or place, speaking with those who are in the Indies, speaking to those who are not yet born, nor shall be this thousand or ten thousand years? And with no greater difficulty than the various arrangements of two dozen little signs on paper? Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of men.3

If the 'precessional message' identified by scholars like Santillana, von Dechend and Jane Sellers is indeed a deliberate attempt at communication by some lost civilization of antiquity, how come it wasn't just written down and left for us to find? Wouldn't that have been easier than encoding it in myths? Perhaps.
Nevertheless, suppose that whatever the message was written on got destroyed or worn away after many thousands of years? Or suppose that the language in which it was inscribed was later forgotten utterly (like the enigmatic Indus Valley script, which has been studied closely for more than half a century but has so far resisted all attempts at decoding)? It must be obvious that in such circumstances a written / Page 287 / legacy to the future would be of no value at all, because nobody would be able to make sense of it.
What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them - and the city of Teotihuacan may be the calling-card of a lost civilization written in the eternal language of mathematics.
Geodetic data, related to the exact positioning of fixed geographical points and to the shape and size of the earth, would also remain valid and recognizable for tens of thousands of years, and might be most conveniently expressed by means of cartography (or in the construction of giant geodetic monuments like the Great Pyramid of Egypt, as we shall see).
Another 'constant' in our solar system is the language of time: the great but regular intervals of time calibrated by the inch-worm creep of precessional motion. Now, or ten thousand years in the future, a message that prints out numbers like 72 or 2160 or 4320 or 25,920 should be instantly intelligible to any civilization that has evolved a modest talent for mathematics and the ability to detect and measure the almost imperceptible reverse wobble that the sun appears to make along the ecliptic against the background of the fixed stars..."

"What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them"

"WRITTEN IN THE ETERNAL LANGUAGE OF MATHEMATICS"

UNDERSTANDING HIEROGLYPHS

Hilary Wilson 1995

"Page 30

2. PERSONAL NAMES
Egyptian was an unpointed language, as are printed Arabic and Hebrew, meaning they are written without vowels. Figure IQ
( opposite) shows the hieroglyphic signs now recognized as being alphabetic. Approximate sound-values have been given for each of the signs, which include some semi-vowels or weak consonants like the alif and ayin of Arabic, both of which may be pronounced as 'ah'. In cases where vowels are necessary to pronunciation the modern convention is to insert the letter 'e', so that the word for 'name', which is spelled 'rn', is usually pronounced 'ren'. This does not mean that this is how the word was spoken, it is simply a convenient aid to students of ancient Egyptian. Neither does it indicate that 'e' was the most common vowel sound in the ancient tongue. This practice is no more than a recently accepted means of vocalizing the language. In fact there are very few clues as to how the language sounded, so modern pronunciation is largely a matter of educated guesswork and the source of much learned discussion, not to say argument.
The hieroglyphic 'alphabet' is conventionally arranged according to the order of a Semitic alphabet like Arabic. The last four signs in the centre of the last row of the alphabet chart are commonly used alternatives for signs already listed. See below for the use of the last sign, the lion hieroglyph. The mouth-sign 'r' was also used occasionally in place of '1'.
When the Rosetta Stone was found in 1799, French scholars quickly realized how important a discovery it was, for the text inscribed upon it was repeated in three different scripts - hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek. Since the last was a known language it could be used to decipher the Egyptian inscriptions. The British physicist Thomas Young made some headway in identifying words / Page 31 / within the demotic text and made the important observation that there seemed to be phonetic elements within the script. His Egyptian studies were no more than a holiday diversion, a relaxing interlude in his more important work, but his observations were valid and almost certainly came to the notice of Champollion who was working on the same texts in France.

Page32

Champollion concentrated on the hieroglyphic inscription and was the first to realize that there were far too few individual hieroglyphs for the script to be purely pictorial and yet too many for it to be entirely phonetic. He also noticed that the positions of names within the Greek text could correspond with those oval cartouches which clearly marked out important words or phrases in the hieroglyphic section. It was, therefore, the names in the Rosetta Stone inscription which gave the clue to the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script as a whole.
The values assigned by Champollion to the hieroglyphs in the names Ptolemy and Cleopatra were based on the correct assumption that, being offoreign origin, (Macedonian Greek), they would have had no meaning in the Egyptian language and would have had to be spelled out phonetically (see fig. I I). Thus he identified some signs as vowels which, in the light oflater studies, have been shown to be weak consonants or bi-literal signs. The '0' in both Ptolemy and Cleopatra is indicated by a looped rope or lasso which has the phonetic value 'wa', and there are two different signs used where a 't' would be expected which indicates that one, now recognized as a 'd', was pronounced somewhat more softly than the other. The lion symbol, to which Champollion assigned the value '1', was in fact an Egyptian compromise. As in Japanese, the sound '1' does not occur in ancient Egyptian and the Egyptians had great difficulty in pronouncing this consonant. In foreign words or names the 'I' was usually replaced by 'r' or a compound 'rw', the latter being the phonetic value of the lion sign. Altogether this gives the impression that the Egyptians pronounced the names Ptwarwmys (Ptolemaios) and Krwiwapadra (Cleopatra).
This is one of the clues to the ancient pronunciation of the language. Further ideas can be gained from the writings of classical authors who Hellenized and Latinized Egyptian names to make life easier for their readers. This Hellenization could be said to have started with Herodotus who visited Egypt around 400 BC. He was the sort of tourist still adored by modern guides. He soaked up everything he was told and reported it in his Histories for readers to draw their own conclusions as to what was true and what was fantasy. The Egyptian priest Manetho also wrote in Greek and used / / Page 33 / / names which came more easily to Greek tongues. These Hellenized names are still in common use so the goddess Ast or Iset became Isis, and her husband Wsir is better known as Osiris. The kings Amenhotep are often called Amenophis and the city of Men-nefer is always referred to as Memphis. Although these have been changed from their Egyptian forms they are not so different as to completely hide the original pronunciation. The god Amen had his name written as Imn in Egyptian but the Romans worshipped him as Ammon, associating him with Jupiter. This gives a very good idea of how they heard the name and how it could be vocalized today. However the same god may have his name spelled out as Amen, Amon or Amun, the last being pronounced in recent years as Amoon. There seems to be no justification for the use of anyone of these in preference to any other since the vowel between the 'm' and 'n' was not written in the hieroglyphic form. In this book the spelling preferred is Amen, continuing the use of the inserted 'e' for ease of pronunciation.
Because the Greeks and Romans tried to associate Egyptian gods with deities of the classical pantheon, or perhaps because they could not get their tongues around the original names, the names of some gods have become corrupted beyond recognition. The ibisheaded god of writing is known as Thoth which was altered by the Greeks from the Egyptian Djehuti (see fig.31, page 97). By modern convention the Greek version of this name is used in personal / Page 34 / names but it may occur in different spellings.

Page 34

"Living Image of Amen".

Page 35

"Most kings were addressed by their official coronation names which, in their hieroglyphic forms, very often contain the names of two or more deities. It may be difficult to decide which god's name appears where in the order of pronunciation but in Akkadian, as in Greek, the name was written as it sounded to foreign ears. So Amenhotep III was called Nimuria by the King of Babylon in letters preserved in the Amarna archive. The king's coronation name was written in the order Re-Maet-neb but the Akkadian version gives a clear indication that it was pronounced Neb-Maet-Re.
Coptic, being the last spoken version of ancient Egyptian, can also give some guide as to how words may be pronounced. By comparing Coptic words with the alphabetic hieroglyphs it is possible to explain the choice of a sign to represent a particular sound. The Coptic word for 'mouth' is 'ra' and the mouth sign in Egyptian was used for the consonant 'r'. This is a simple principle - 'r' for 'ro' like 'r' for 'rabbit' in English, or 'r' for 'rai' in French. Unfortunately Coptic itself was a dying language, even in Champollion's time, when it was understood and used only by diminishing communities of Coptic Christian monks. It also has to be appreciated that Coptic was the latest and therefore the most corrupt form of the ancient tongue. The language spoken by a Copt and that by a man from the Old Kingdom was separated by more than two thousand years. Compare how much English has changed in the same length of time, not many ordinary people would be able to understand Anglo-Saxon, Old English, or Chaucerian Middle English and even Elizabethan English, as used by Shakespeare, causes many headaches for modern schoolchildren.
Such are some of the complexities of the pronunciation of Egyptian names. It has to be accepted that no one today can accurately vocalize the ancient Egyptian language. Ancient Egyptian cannot be spoken. Such as it remains, it is only a written language that may be read with greater or lesser ease, depending on the style of the script and the period in which it was written. The elements of the language which changed least throughout the 3500 years of dynastic history were names, titles and numbers which makes a study of these an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to learn..."

Page 142

"Pinedjem II was the grandson of the first High Priest to have officially claimed the kingship. The area covered by his wife's priestly titles shows that the influence of the priest-kings of Thebes stretched well into Middle Egypt.
With the emphasis on the religious nature of the kingship, the rulers of Thebes often appealed to Amen-Re for advice on political matters. Oracular decisions indicated by the bowing or halting of the god's bark were sought on several well-documented occasions including once when the hereditary rights of the Princess Maet-kaRe were decided by the Theban triad, Amen, Mut and Khonsu. By the latter part of the Twenty-first Dynasty the title 'God's Wife of Amen' was held by a royal daughter who was then consecrated to the god as his wife. She became the 'Divine Adoratrice', the 'Hand of the God', a celibate priestess who continued to wield considerable political influence. She officiated at the temple in rites previously performed by the king or the High Priest. Her name was written in cartouche as befitted a representative of royal power who was also accepted by the priesthood. When Thebes finally lost its independence to a new dynasty of kings from Nubia, the incumbent 'God's Wife of Amen', the daughter of the last king of the Twenty-third Dynasty, was forced to adopt the daughter of the new king as her successor, indicating the political importance placed on the role of 'High Priestess of Amen' by the Nubians. The chapels which were built as mortuary-shrines for the 'God's Wives of Amen' of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty are still to be seen at Medinet Habu. The sarcophagus of the 'God's Wife of Amen' Ankhes-en-nefer-ib-Re, the last holder of the title, is on display in the British Museum.
Apart from the temples of the gods there were other places of employment for priests, notably the mortuary cults of the kings. In the Old Kingdom these temples were attached to the royal pyramid-tombs around which small townships arose to house and provide offices for the temple personnel. (see fi9-47, page 134). By the New Kingdom the kings had separated the building of tomb and mortuary temple so that the shrines to the memory of the deceased monarchs were built on the valley floor beneath the western cliffs at Thebes."
